Updating Google Play services

If a user is in the process of updating their Rumie Tablet and Rumie app software version with an SD card, there are some steps required in initially updating Google Play services.

Updating Google Play services through SD Card

  1. Ensure you have updated to at least version 2.2.2 on both the Rumie Tablet and the Rumie app (see instructions above on “Updating with SD card”)
  2. The Google Play services latest version will always be in your Deployment Library on learncloud.rumie.org. It is connected to the Google Play Store which will always have the latest version of the app so there is no need to re-add the app to your deployment library
  3. To get the latest version of your apps, including Google Play services, onto the Rumie tablet, you must re-generate your Deployment library and load the latest deployment library onto an SD card
  4. Before syncing the SD card onto your tablet, take note of the current Google Play services version, to ensure that is has updated once the sync is complete
    1. In the home screen of your tablet navigate to the tablet Settings -> Apps -> Google Play services
    2. The version will be listed at the top
  5. Sync the SD card onto the Rumie tablet
  6. Once the deployment library has been synced, a notification will appear when logging into the LearnCloud app: “Update Google Play services: Google Play services won’t run unless you update it.Do not accept this notification. Click outside the notification on the screen to get rid of it
    1. This notification requires Wifi and a Gmail account to update Google Play services through it. If the tablets are being shared or there is no access to Wifi then this notification should be ignored.
  7. Inside Rumie app login to the Admin user
  8. Navigate back to the home screen -> tablet Settings -> Apps -> Google Play services and confirm the version has been updated

If the version of Google Play services did not successfully update by this point, continue with these further steps:

  1. Reboot the Rumie tablet
  2. On the side of the tablet hold down the small button to bring up some options
  3. Select “Reboot”
  4. The tablet will reboot by turning Off and then On again. Please wait for this process to complete
  5. Once your tablet is back on navigate to the tablet Settings -> Apps -> Google Play services and the version should be up to date

Google Play services is a system level app so sometimes it can take a few tries to get up-to-date. If Google Play services is still appearing as the old version after the steps above have been completed, re-sync your deployment library on the Rumie tablet through the SD card and check the Google Play services again as it will now be up-to-date.

Updating Google Play services with Wifi

Google Play services will automatically update to the latest software version when a Rumie tablet is connected to Wifi as long as the Rumie tablet software and Rumie app are up to date on at least version 2.2.2.

  1. In the LearnCloud app, login as Admin to access the tablets Settings
  2. Navigate to the home screen -> tablet Settings -> Apps -> Google Play services
  3. The version will be listed at the top
  4. To confirm that the tablet is operating on the most recent version of Google Play services you can navigate to the Internet and in the URL type in the following address: www.androidapksfree.com/apk/google-play-services/
  5. The most recent version of Google Play services will be listed
  6. Google Play services
